Manassas

When people think of Manassas, Virginia, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the Manassas National Battlefield Park.

This was the location of two famous Civil War Battles, The First Battle of Bull Run (the name used by Union forces), also known as the Battle of First Manassas (the name used by Confederate forces) and the Second Battle of Bull Run or The Battle of Second Manassas.

There are actually two areas which go by the name of Manassas.  There is the independent city of Manassas which is roughly bordered by I-66, U.S. 29, Virginia State Route 234 Business and Virginia State Route 28. This city has a population of just over 40,000 and is knowns for its quaint Old Town area with shops, restaurants, the Harris Pavilion (used for farmers market and concerts in the summer and ice skating in the winter) and the Manassas Museum.  This city has its own local government and school system.  Then there is the area of Manassas that is part of Prince William County.  This area of Manassas encircles the independent city of Manassas and is part of the county government and school district.  While you may not know whether you are in the city of Manassas or the part of Manassas that is in the county, this is something that you should research if you are planning to move to the area because it will make a difference in your local government, taxes, utilities, and schools.

Manassas is located in the central part of Prince William County and is home to the County Seat.  Most of the shopping and restaurants are concentrated on Sudley Road.  In terms of transportation, people living in Manassas have easy access to I66, Rt 234, Rt 28, the Virginia Railway Express, and many commuter buses.  The Manassas Airport is located just outside of town as well.  Manassas is also home to many employers like Lockheed Martin, Micron, Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University – Science and Technology Campus, and Novant Health UVA Prince William Medical Center. While there are many historic areas in Manassas to visit, Manassas is also a great place to live and work.
